• Calibrated polyester

    Introduction;

    There exists two versions of the calibrated polyesters; the coarse and smooth versions. Both are used to form adhesive layers for plates and underblankets. The following is a review on various products of the calibrated polyester, applications and various uses;

    Products:

    • Printing blankets, sleeves and packing materials.
    • Foils-they include mounting foils and forme manufacturing embossing chemicals.
    • Underlay sheets and materials.
    • Material for manufacturing hardness measuring instruments

    Out of the above products, the main purpose of the polyester is seen in the press room equipment i.e. printing blankets and packaging materials. This includes rejuvenating solutions, blanket washing and packing gauges.

    Printing is done for both commercial and personal purpose. However the purpose, the quality of the print is always a major consideration. The equipments layout and printing paper materials ultimately determine the quality if the print. Therefore, individual work to ensure the right installations have been done on their printing press machines so as to produce the best print image possible. These calls for underlaying and packing on the press surface to ensure effective printing. The following is a discussion on underpacking with concentration on polyester.

    Underlaying and packing are the art of installing materials to act as gauges and cushions to facilitate other processes e.g. for this case it is done to cover the plate cylinder or the blanket cylinder in a printing press so as to position and hold the printing papers being printed. The polyester is calibrated and is available in both adhesive and non adhesive range format. The non adhesive polyester sheets are fitted with clipping bars on to the cylinder. The sheet is installed between the printer and the plate and blanket cylinders so that the inked plate of the printer can hit on the paper rolling on it.

    It works to provide a balance of pressure between the inked plate and the surface to which it is applied, and with the right specifications of diameter and height of the packing material, an image of the best quality is obtained and minimal wastage.

    This therefore calls for good calibrated products that offer strong mechanical stress resistance and high print quality.

    The calibrated polyester is constituent of polymers. Polymers offer the best quality of material because of their characteristics which includes;

    Durability; the composition of polymers makes them long lasting as they are resistant to most chemicals, stretching and wrinkling, and resistant to abrasion.

    Polyester is solvent resistant and dries quickly. This helps to protect the cylinder from corrosion due to the liquid between the packing and cylinder that would otherwise pass through.

    Ability to retain its shape; Polyesters are Resistant to mechanical Stress, they have the ability to Self-level with a high Capacity to adapt to the cylinders profile.

    Strength: Polyester fabrics and fibers are extremely strong. This gives them high usage flexibility thus offering Stability of the layer during the printing runs. The sheet also works to minimize the movement of the blanket during printing.

    Polyesters are fire resistant and environmental friendly to use.

    Conclusion;

    The calibrated polyester has contributed greatly in the formation of new product. Arguably, it’s the most multifaceted polyester model due to its many products . This products exhibit maximum dimensional stability and less residual wastage. This is facilitated by its quality and strength. Ultimately, the products output and functionality is enhanced resulting in maximum efficiency.
